Avon Global Ambassador

Reese’s Part
Reese Witherspoon has been named the first-ever Honorary Chairperson of the Avon Foundation, it was announced on August 1, 2007. In this newly-established role, Ms. Witherspoon will work with the Avon Foundation on its mission programs focused on breast cancer, domestic violence and emergency relief initiatives. Reese is also serving in the newly created role of Global Ambassador for Avon Products, Inc.

“I am very excited to be partnering with the Avon Foundation, which is known the world over as a crusader for women’s causes.” said Ms. Witherspoon. “I am truly impressed by how Avon has been able to effect real change. I feel a great responsibility in my own life to give back to society. Now, as the Honorary Chairman of the Avon Foundation, I am proud to be joining in the great philanthropic work that is already underway.”

“We are delighted to welcome Reese to the Avon Foundation as our first-ever honorary chairman,” stated Carol Kurzig, executive director, Avon Foundation. “She has a passionate commitment to helping other women and giving back to society, and her personal warmth touches all who meet her. We are confident Reese will accelerate the Avon Foundation’s work to improve the lives of women.”

As one of her first official acts, Ms. Witherspoon joined the Avon Foundation executives and Andrea Jung, Chairman and CEO of Avon Products, Inc., on August 1, 2007, to greet walkers at a training walk for the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer Los Angeles, coming up on September 15-16. The surprise visit by the actress, and the news of her role with the Avon Foundation, sent a flash of excitement through the throng of walkers, who had the opportunity to chat with Reese before heading out for their scheduled training walk through LA.

“As a woman and a mother I care deeply about the well being of other women and children throughout the world and through the years, I have always looked for opportunities to make a difference,” said Reese.

About The Foundation
The Avon Foundation is a public charity founded in 1955 with a mission to improve the lives of women and their families globally. Today that mission is brought to life through two key initiatives: the Avon Foundation Breast Cancer Crusade, which advances access to care and finding a cure, with a focus on the medically underserved; and the Speak Out Against Domestic Violence program which works to end the cycle of domestic violence, with a special focus on children. The Avon Foundation also supports emergency and disaster relief. Funds and awareness are raised through a wide variety of programs and events such as the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer series, the Need for Speed Relay Against Domestic Violence, the annual Awards Celebration, and the sale of unique fundraising products. Through 2006 more than $500 million had been raised and donated worldwide for breast cancer and domestic violence as well as emergency/disaster relief and the original mission of the Foundation, women’s empowerment.

8th New Orleans Katrina Child Watch

Reese’s Part
In May 2006, fresh out of her Oscar win, Reese Witherspoon lent her name once again for an important cause. Along with a delegation of prominent Hollywood and Washington, DC women – including Jennifer Garner, Cicely Tyson, Regina King, and Deborah Santana – Reese traveled to New Orleans on May 8th to shine a light on the acute mental health, health and education crises of children traumatized by Katrina’s storm over eight months ago. The delegation saw New Orleans’ devastated Lower Ninth Ward; visited a trailer camp to talk with Katrina survivors about their living conditions; met with children and parents at the opening of the first of thirteen planned CDF Freedom Schools sites in Louisiana to provide children summer educational and cultural enrichment, mental health and health supports; talked with doctors operating a mobile medical van; and met with women leaders from Gulf Coast states, including Women of the Storm, to hear their concerns about the struggles of Katrina families and communities.

Reese Witherspoon said that the May 8th Katrina Child Watch visit will be the first of many to the Gulf Coast states and to the doors of political leaders until they act to prevent irreversible harm to Katrina children and provide comprehensive national coverage to the nine million children denied the basic right to health and mental health care in the richest nation on earth.

“I don’t think you get a real clear perspective unless you come down and see it,” Reese said. “The children need attention right now.” “I think that this issue has waned in the media. I think that the children of Katrina, and the mothers and the families, are not at the forefront of the news media right now. I feel really like it’s absolutely imperative that myself and this delegation of women have gotten together to come down and show that we haven’t forgotten. We still care about these children. We are going to continue to lobby for these children.”

Her experiences in New Orleans left Reese with an everlasting print. “I feel really blessed to be able to be on this side of it, but I also recognize the huge responsibility that we have to these people. And I will never forget this experience”, she said.

Reese’s Part
Reese first read Children’s Defense Fund Founders novel The Measure of Our Success during her year in Stanford University. Later, between the filming of Election and Legally Blonde, Reese went through “a little bit of a rough patch. It was before Legally Blonde, and I was having a hard time getting a job. There were all these questions about my weight, and I was asking myself, Why am I an actress? What is life about? So I started reading the book again, and I called the Children’s Defense Fund to see if I could help.” Since then Reese has regularly participated in voluntary fund-raising events, contributed financially, and donated all of the proceeds from the Legally Blonde Barbie Dolls and meets with each year’s college–scholarship winners. Reese has also attended the 2004, 2005 and 2006 Annual Beat the Odds Awards.
